2018 Inductees

(New York, NY) The Headwear Association (THA) has announced the inductees for the Tenth Annual Headwear Hall of Fame, and the honors go to Oprah Winfrey, Keith Richards, Anne Hathaway, Brian Dawkins, Beyoncé Knowles, and Chris Stapleton.

The Tenth Annual Hall of Fame Inductees:

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is an American media executive, actress, talk show host, television producer and philanthropist. She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest-rated television program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011 in Chicago.

As an internationally revered actress, talk show host, publishing magnate and philanthropist, Oprah has always worn a lot of hats – figuratively and literally. She is a fan of wide brims and dress hats, and has worn hats on numerous covers since launching O Magazine in April 2000.

Oprah has spoken about the importance of the hat in the history of African American women’s fashion, and she hosted Garden Parties and Gospel Luncheons where guests were required to wear hats. At the Royal Wedding in May 2018, Oprah looked resplendent in a peachy pink design from celebrated milliner, Philip Treacy.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé is an icon. She has sold over 100 million records worldwide as a solo artist, and a further 60 million records with Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé has won 23 grammys. She is also regarded as fashion trendsetter, and has been a fan of hats for years.

Ever since she got into formation with her album critically acclaimed album, Lemonade, Beyoncé has been rocking show stopping oversized hats. Her iconic Grammy was a dramatic custom Nicolas Jebran gown perfectly paired with an oversized chapeau.  Her love of hats spreads to her dancers, she dressed them all in matching custom Kangol berets at Coachella.

Keith Richards

Keith Richards is an English musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the co-founder, guitarist, backing and occasional lead vocalist, and co-principal songwriter of the Rolling StonesRolling Stone magazine called Richards the creator of “rock’s greatest single body of riffs” on guitar and ranked him fourth on its list of 100 best guitarists.

Ever since The Rolling Stones made their debut in 1964, Richards has been sporting his signature fedora through the decades.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is a talented American actress and singer. Hathaway has received multiple awards, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe,
British Academy Film Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award

A consummate hat fan, Hathaway has been seen over the years in a variety of fashionable headwear. Her favorites include floppy boho wide brims, straw panamas, Greek Fisherman caps and knit beanies.

Her red carpet choices for the Met Gala often feature dramatic headwear; in 2015 her dramatic liquid gold gown from Ralph Lauren featured on oversize hood. In 2018 she opted for Valentino again, and topped her look with a dramatic spiked crown. For her wedding Hathaway paired her custom Valentino gown with a dramatic vintage headpiece and veil.

Brian Dawkins

Football legend Brian Dawkins played 16 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles. Regarded as one of the greatest safeties of all time, Dawkins was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His acceptance speech was profoundly moving.

A long-time hat fan, Dawson has a new gig now – Hat Designer.

Chris Stapleton

Chris Stapleton burst onto the country music scene in 2015 with his smash debut album, ‘Traveller.’

Since then, Stapleton has won five Grammy Awards, seven Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, and ten Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, including 2018 Male Vocalist of the Year.

Stapleton is rarely seen without a classic cowboy hat, his go-to being the
Charlie 1 Horse Sturgis with a bold sunburst of feathers and turquoise.

The THA Headwear Hall of Fame now totals 60 stylish individuals. The diverse group includes Princess Diana, Johnny Depp, Pharrell Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Samuel L Jackson, Diane Keaton, Humphrey Bogart and LL Cool J.

Our mission is to promote hats and the headwear industry throughout the world, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry. The 110th annual THA Gala will be held at The Central Park Boathouse on April 28, 2018, and is open to anyone in the fashion and headwear industry.

The Headwear Association is a 111-year old trade association, the oldest in the fashion industry.

Our birth was a chance meeting of traveling hat salesmen in 1907 who had just finished their seasonal selling trips in NYC. The first dinner was held at the Waldorf Astoria (then on 34th Street) on January 30, 1908 with 34 industry members present.

Our mission is to promote hats and the headwear industry throughout the world, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry. The 111th annual THA Gala will be held at The Central Park Boathouse on April 11, 2019, and is open to anyone in the fashion and headwear industry.
