Met Gala 2018 “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”

Designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the Metropolitan Museum’s holdings, the show is presented in a trinity of locations: the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the Met’s Fifth Avenue location, and further uptown at the Cloisters. Central to the conversation will be the papal garb on loan from the Sistine Chapel sacristy, many of which have never been seen outside the Vatican.

Anne Hathaway took glamour to new heights in a dramatic blood red Valentino, accessorized with a halo of gold quills designed by hairstylist Adir Abergel.

In keeping with the exhibition’s “Heavenly Bodies” motif, designer John G.alliano’s pulled together Rhianna’s 2018 look channeled the grandeur of Catholic vestments with a cream bejeweled gown layered beneath a flowing overcoat from Maison Margiela.
Sarah Jessica Parker wearing in a metallic three-quarter-length-sleeve Dolce & Gabbana gown with a long train that features gold embroidery throughout with red heart accents, she is also wearing a nativity scene to scale, which directly honors the theme.
Priyanka Chopra hit the Met gala with a Ralph Lauren burgundy velvet gown topped off with an incredible gold beaded hood, which she paired with subtle Cartier jewelry.The ornate piece is made of red Swarovski crystals and gold beading which is handmade and took over 250 hours to make. The actress’ jeweled hood made for a truly unique take on the religious red carpet theme.
Solange Knowles in Iris van Herpen and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, she also carried Florida water in her crystal-netted bag as a metaphorical accessory to go along with the theme . She also wore a black du-rag with a gold-encrusted halo headband
Mindy Kaling in Vassilis Zoulias and Fred Leighton jewelry. She arrives wearing a massive crown.featuring giant light blue gems for the occasion, giving off some serious medieval royal vibes.
SZA took this event in a celestial direction with her blush pink Versace princess gown, She finished off the look with a dramatic gold headpiece with little stars that extended toward the heavens, for an angel like feel.
Cardi B was dressed in a gem-encrusted Moschino by Jeremy Scott gown.

Nicki manaj arrived in a bright red Oscar de la Renta gown, she was inspired to choose her sultry dress and bejeweled headpiece because she wanted to play the more sinful side of this year’s theme, “I’m the bad guy and I wanted to make sure the bad guy was here,” she said, obliquely referencing her latest song, “Chun-Li.”
Monae screenshotted her favourite elements from the catwalk, and designer Jacobs sent back some sketches of how they could adapt the pieces into something special for the red carpet. The hand-beaded, crystallized head wrap – which is an extension of the face mask on her third album cover – sits under a bespoke Stephen Jones hat. “He did a custom version of the Marc Jacobs catwalk hats that mimicked an archive piece he created for a Nineties Mugler show “The gold leather design sits back on her head and looks like a halo.”
Madonna arrives in a gothic ensemble by Jean Paul Gaultier and accessorized with a black veil, crown of crosses, and plenty of jeweled rosaries, took the theme to a whole another level when she treated Met Gala attendees to a surprise performance of “Like a Prayer,” the notorious song that’s most closely linked to her religious associations.
Lana Del Rey showed up to the red carpet in a cream-color dress with gold accents, including a sacred heart chest plate (with multiple tiny daggers stuck in it!) and an ombré blue headpiece with wings. Michele and Leto wore similarly intricate Gucci ensembles with blue accents and golden crowns, and together, the three looked as if they had walked straight out of a Renaissance-era painting hanging in the Uffizi gallery.
Kate upton shows up in a crown beaded with stones to match designer Alexandre Birman, handmade sandals for this event. She wears a hunter green hooded gown featuring a rope-like belt to pull it off.
Majorie Harvey, with her flower crown secured around her up-do and styled in Dolce & Gabbana , along with her cross appliqués, Marjorie made everyone stop and stare.
Carol Delev outfit stands for dramatic dress code rules, dressed as a confession box. She completes her outfit with a headpiece-cum-crown with a hanging face shade, the model topped off the accessory criteria.
Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung, Tasaki jewelry, and Philip Treacy x Tasaki headpiece .The beautiful and playful frock paired with a unique pearl headpiece made for a pure and powerful ensemble.
The headpiece itself featured black roses, a cross, and spikes, reminiscent of how the Virgin Mary is represented in many pieces of art. In contrast to her dark and theatrical accessory, Rita wore her makeup bronzed and glowy.
Winnie’s all-white gown features a classic fit-and-flare silhouette that resembles a fairytale wedding dress. To keep within the event’s religious theme, she added an oversized Catholic-inspired crown and incorporated a minimal diamond necklace and bracelets. Her outfit gives many religious visuals
Ariana Grande donned a Vera Wang gown screen-printed with images from Michelangelo’s iconic fresco, The Last Judgement, which adorns the sanctuary wall of the Sistine Chapel. She crowned the look with an angelic headpiece constructed using flowing ribbon and horsehair. Designer Vera Wang said, the look was her “modern interpretation of catholic iconography.”
